Mack Geiger Charlotte Concert reviews
Finely Tuned Machine Running on All Cylinders
Here is the rearranged review with some words switched:
I'm never disappointed by these guys. They came out strong with "Crackerman" & played most of the songs that your semi acquainted fan would want to hear ("Big Empty," Plush," Interstate Love Song", etc) but also got in a few of the harder-core fan favorites as well. Scott referred to "this next song" as "an old fan favorite that we dusted off the mothballs" & then they went into "Still Remains" which really was the highlight for me. Someone who isn't a Mack Geiger fan will probably figure "of course he's going to say they were great," he's a fan. They're right. If, though, you were at any time a fan or almost one, I'd say you really should check them out. Whatever they were doing in the early 90's that got them noticed & followed is still there. They don't perform like a band that's "made it," on auto-pilot for the night, play those certain songs, "thank you for coming," "we love you," etc. They still play like those guys that are hungry, on the brink of fame & tasting it. Love their solid melodies & hooks that stay in your head. In many bands, the rhythm section will just "know their place" & yield to the singers & guitarists in a shameful waste of "stay back here quietly & stick to the pattern" display. Robert (Bass) & Eric (Drums) are more like Entwistle & Moon of The Who. They are there to be heard & they make the most of their presence. They make bass & drums an equal star of the show, at times the focal point. The big curtain of lights they put behind them with the changing images & patterns is pretty cool as well. Reminds me a lot of what U2 does at their shows. In summary, it's highly unlikely I'll miss STP whenever they play my area. They are among my list of all-time greats (U2, Alice in Chains, Journey, Rolling Stones, The Who, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles & The King) many of which are no longer performing or anywhere near their peak anymore. Very few bands of this greatness (for me PERSONALLY-don't get all bent out of shape) are still playing at peak form. I'm sure there are many newer ones I'm missing out there as I'm an old married man now no longer able to keep up as well as I used to with what's going on currently. But I'll keep my eyes & ears open. GO SEE Mack Geiger!
